Gift-Giving Ideas for Christmas

Saturday, October 20, 2012
Hi everyone! I am back after a few days of blogging hiatus. And as a treat for all of you, a special blogger will be guest posting today and she is Miss Maricel Rivera.

It’s the BER months once again, and despite everything that’s going on in the general economy, we just can’t deny it, Christmas is around the corner. In the Philippines, Christmas is synonymous to gift-giving, best of all, spending time with family and friends, especially those we haven’t seen for a while – yes, a family reunion of sorts.

Shop for gifts early

While gift-giving may be totally optional and dependent on the beliefs you uphold, if you choose to give gifts and there’s a good number of people you’re planning to send gifts to this Christmas, it is advisable to start preparing the gifts as early as possible (some people I know prepare as early as the start of the year) for the following practical reasons:
  • First off, it’s cost-effective. Last-minute shopping won’t give you enough time to shop for economically attractive items. Not that you’re being cheap. Sticking to what you can afford is sensible. After all, cliché as it is, in gift-giving, the sentiment behind the gift is what should weigh the heaviest.
  • Second, buying all the gifts at once isn’t budget-friendly, especially if you don’t have enough cash to cover everything in your gift list in one go. And if you’re financially savvy, you should know that using your credit card to purchase the gifts isn’t a smart move. You wouldn’t want to start another year with a substantial amount of debt, would you?
  • Third, and probably most important of all, when you’re in a hurry, there’s a chance you’ll forget somebody, or worse, pick out gifts that are totally inappropriate.
Gift ideas worth noting

Depending on your preference, available time and budget, the Internet offers a whole host of gift ideas. From very young kids to teenagers, girls and boys, grandma and grandpa, vegetarian Uncle Dave, trendy Auntie Nora, your cousin who's a complete buff, and so on and so forth.

Homemade gift ideas. If you are on the crafty side, I'm betting you're going to enjoy creating homemade gifts for the people you care about. There's an endless list of ideas out there. All you need to do is log on to the Internet, type in some key words and press Enter. Here are some of those ideas:
  • bake cookies and put them in a jar you personally decorated
  • create a T-shirt with either foot or palm prints (yes, the real ones!), along with a personalized message
  • create a pretty jewelry box for Auntie Nora's fancy bling-blings
  • make bead accessories
  • craft an attractive CD sun catcher
Gift ideas for men and women. Generally speaking, if you're not sure what to wrap in that fancy gift wrapper yet, the gifts you choose would have to depend on the age and personality types of the men and women you're giving gifts to. For the creative thinker in your man, vintage shirts, a guitar gift basket, face mugs or LEGO sculptures may actually work. For your female best friend who's the ultimate health nut, a sports band, personalized gym towels or a hoodie may result in a warm thank-you hug.

Gifts for kids. For your girly niece, Barbie may still click. Otherwise, try some bright-colored nail polish, trendy TOMS, personalized necklace or a tote bag with a picture of her favorite boy band. For the wiz kid (boy or girl), a puzzle ball or an encyclopedia for kids can do wonders. Scrabble and other board games might do the trick, too.

Other pointers to keep in mind:

If you’re an online coupon hunter, you probably already know by now that group-buying sites like Groupon or Living Social can save you a lot of cash, as long as you know what you’re looking for and stay away from dubious deals. That said, consider shopping for discount vouchers for your loved ones, too.

If you’re an expat and oceans away from home, to safely ship the gifts you have carefully picked out for your family and friends, use bdcm cardboard boxes, industry standards for packing clothes and garments and other retail items.

Final words

This Christmas, to reduce, if not totally eliminate, the stress that usually accompanies bulk gift purchases, plan early, shop early so you can smile all the way to Christmas early as well.
